Why Join ASLIA Vic?

Professional development ASLIA Vic. conducts workshops on relevant subjects and important issues. These workshops cover a wide range of topics including Educational, Theatre, Conference, Medical and Legal interpreting. ASLIA Vic. also alerts members of professional development opportunities provided by other organisations. An ASLIA Vic. State Conference is held biennially. All of our professional development utilises the expertise of individuals such as academics, practitioners and members of the Deaf community. Aslia Vic. believes that no member shall be excluded from activities due to financial hardship.

Value for money Annual membership of ASLIA Vic. is only $100 for full members (accredited interpreters and DRIs), $80 for associate members (unaccredited interpreters or accredited interpreters who have not practiced in the past 12 months), $50 for students (conditions apply) and $150 for corporate members/organisations. Professional development is often discounted if not free for members. Most members are able to claim their membership fee or workshops expenses back at tax time! Additionally, provided free of charge to members is the quarterly, 40-page newsletter Across the Board, which is informative, thought provoking as well as fun.

Professional education ASLIA Vic. lobbies and works with institutions such as TAFE colleges and Universities to establish and maintain courses in Auslan and Auslan interpreting. We also work towards establishing and maintaining the future of courses for the training of interpreters.

Information ASLIA Vic. holds general meetings regularly. These meetings share information between members and between the executive committee and the membership. It is also an opportunity for any member to raise issues of concern. Members can benefit from meeting and listening to Deaf and hearing representatives from relevant organisations. In addition minutes of meetings, upcoming news and events, advertisements for job opportunities and other relevant industry information are distributed to all our members. Being a member of ASLIA Vic. also means you have automatic membership to ASLIA National and receive regular updates.

Support and social interaction Interpreting can be an isolating profession. Many of us work alone and rarely have the opportunity to talk to other interpreters about the issues we face. ASLIA Vic. provides a forum where interpreters can come together to discuss issues of importance, share a laugh and learn from each other.

Advice and research ASLIA Vic. resources include videos, books and reports that can be borrowed by members. Correspondence such as minutes of meetings from other ASLIA state organisations is also available. ASLIA Vic. is also a vital reference in respect to working conditions, ethics, employers, training and other contextual information.
