Report on WFD--An Audience with Colin Allen

Saturday 9th February 2008
from Therese Pierce

Following the Friday night presentation, Colin Allen met with a small group of Deaf and hearing members on a Saturday morning.  It was a relaxing and informal session and Colin was able to describe his work in developing countries, WFD’s perspectives on Human Rights and the need to continue to improve access for ALL Deaf and hard of hearing people.  He gave interesting insights into the conditions abroad (e.g. Albania, Kosovo, Cambodia and more recently Serbia).  It is amazing in the face of extreme odds, with limited support that we take for granted, he continued to maintain a positive outlook and that we can make a difference!

Colin’s wealth of experience and knowledge in his work with WFD has brought up many issues and barriers—and he was very patient in responding to many of our questions!

Key points from, the discussion:

  • need to keep informed of what is happening
  • need to know your Human Rights
  • Need for Deaf people to be proactive
  • Need to improve interpreting training and access
  • Developing countries---the barriers, the projects, the right to sign language and equal opportunity including access to education and information.
  • Need to remain optimistic and move forward!

Three things he left us with when asked what is it we need for Deaf People:

  • interpreters
  •
  •

Thanks Colin!!
