Report to ASLIA AGM July 2005
The last half of 2004
was exciting non stop activity for the committee and many ASLIA Vic. members.
This was partly due to the Deaflympics but also the result of effective
networking with other organisations such as AUSIT, VCOD, Vicdeaf and even
the Melbourne festival. 2005 has proved much quieter but we are maintaining
excellent membership numbers, still holding great PD workshops and offering
value for members.

Finances & Membership
ASLIA Vic relies mostly on membership fees for income so a strong membership
is essential. We managed to maintain and build our membership which has
seen a further growth in 2005.
A number of partnerships
in ventures have also proved to have positive commercial outcomes.
· KODA Vic, DSRV and ASLIA Vic joined forces to hold successful
Karaoke/Sign idol nights which assisted in raising funds as well as gving
our members a great social night out. Thanks to Julie Judd and Kylie Scott
for spearheading these.
· ASLIA Vic was contracted by the Melbourne Festival to provide
a Workshop in Federation Square on 19th October which Medina Sumovic ran
very successfully. A contribution was received for organising this event.
· Working with M2005 to provide International Sign Training over
two weekends also contributed to the bottom line.
· The ASLIA Vic AUSIT Conference has made a profit which ASLIA
Vic will share.
· Meredith Bartlett developed a 'Refresher Course' for Vicdeaf
in consultation with Sandi Leane & Pip Cody. ASLIA Vic will reap some
profits from this consultation and development.
The newly formed subcommittee on Fundraising and Marketing through Kylie
Scott and Cindy Cave concentrated on finding and applying for available
grants. This has been a great success with two grants received for new
video and computer equipment and the development and printing of a new
brochure. This dynamic duo also successfully applied to Deafness Foundation
for a series of Saturday workshops, two of which have been run and are
listed below.
Professional Development

Conferences
ASLIA National Winter School and AGM was held in Launceston from 20-22nd
August and a number of ASLIA Vic members attended.
National Deafblind Conference in Melbourne 3-5th July. Committee member
Christine Raboteg was heavily involved in the organisation of this Conference
as was member Carla Anderson. Many ASLIA Vic members worked as interpreters
and volunteers at this very successful conference. Cindy Cave attended
as ASLIA Vic's representative and gave a report at a subsequent meeting
ASLIA Vic & AUSIT
Inaugural Conference 23/10 -24/10
This year ASLIA Vic joined with AUSIT Vic/TAS to run a combined conference
at the Batman's Hill on Collins which proved to be highly successful.
The Keynote speaker was Dr. Cynthia Roy an interpreter trainer from Gallaudet
University in the USA. High quality papers were given in parallel sessions
by presenters from both the signed and spoken language field and greatly
appreciated by the attendees. Approximately 150 people attended the conference
from all over Australia which was interpreted into Auslan by a very professional
interpreter team coordinated by Cindy Cave. A highlight of the conference
was the interpreting by Deaf relay interpreters (Chris Dunn and Steffi
Linder) at the Plenary session from Auslan (feeders Tanya Miller and Julie
Judd) into international sign. This was an opportunity for Deaf interpreters
to practice their craft and they did a marvelous job which provided an
education for all. Many thanks to the organising committee, of ASLIA Vic
and AUSIT members with a special mention for the hard work of Sarina Phan
(AUSIT Chair) and Eva Hussain (AUSIT Vice Chair), Chris Poole (Committee
Member) and Ali Dowl who represented ASLIA Vic admirably with a great
contribution.
ASLIA Vic would like to thank and acknowledge the Principal Sponsor On
Call, Key Sponsor VOMA, Supporting sponsors Monash University, Vicdeaf
and Session Sponsors RMIT, DHS and Deaf Children Australia. It was also
pleasing to have ACE involved as a Trade Exhibitor
Networking, Consultation
and Representation in the field
ASLIA Vic maintains
very positive networks with the many organisations in the field. As noted
above we have worked collaboratively with Deaflympics during 2004 to produce
some great training opportunities for interpreters. We have close ties
with Vicdeaf, DBA, AUSIT & Deaf Children Australia and continue to
benefit greatly from the mutual support of these organisations.
Representatives on ASLIA, NAATI RAC, NMIT Auslan Projects Advisory Committee
and others ensure we have up to date information to share and input where
necessary.
Conclusion
ASLIA Vic maintains a strong presence in the interpreting field and is
proud of the work it is doing. There are many challenges for us this year
and into the future but we have a committed and capable structure and
strong membership willing to step up to those challenges.
