ASLIA Vic 2008 and beyond Planning Day

As members will be aware, ASLIA Vic has been ambitious in its program over recent years. It is with a legitimate sense of satisfaction that past committees can tick off a number of achievements that have helped strengthen the organisation. This strengthening, of course, has substantial benefits for our membership, with professional and social activities and up to date information about the field of interpreting being passed on…..to name but a few of these benefits. The newly appointed 2008 committee wishes to continue to provide members with a relevant program as well as looking at possible operational improvements.

As you know, everyone who works for ASLIA Vic, whether as committee members or doing ‘behind the scenes’ work, do so as volunteers, and so one aim is to get through the workload more efficiently. Another initial aim is to look at where we are at and where we may like to be in the longer term. To this end, we have been lucky to have Kyle Miers facilitate our 2008 and beyond planning sessions, held in December with a final follow up planning meeting to be held at the end of January.

With Kyle’s guidance our planning day saw us delve deep into organizational analysis and develop a vision for 2010. We identified strengths and weaknesses, opportunities and threats (commonly called a SWOT analysis). We also looked at possible restructuring of the subcommittees, placing them under port folios, to allow for greater efficiency.

We have identified our priorities for the coming few years as;

On the organizational side of things:-

  • To create an action plan, from the planning day, that will prioritise tasks and look realistically at what can be done with the resources we have;
  • To establish port folios that will include a number of sub-committees;
  • To attempt to obtain funding for a paid position at ASLIA Vic;
  • To develop a succession plan.

On the delivery of services to membership:-

  • To support regional interpreters more;
  • To focus on training ;
  • To work in greater partnership with the Deaf community, through organizations such as VCOD;
  • To support interpreters at all levels with suitable PD.

These are bare bones of what we have in mind and so stay tuned for more details regarding port folios and specific tasks.

Lastly, we are hoping that members will be enthusiastic about also volunteering their skills and/or some time to specific projects, as is already the case with the Interpreting Awards Organising Committee and Educational sub-committee. You may, throughout 2008, be approached by committee members in regards to this. We ask that you consider how you may be able to help. If only for a few hours to put the next edition of ATB into envelopes, we would greatly appreciate whatever time and/or skills you can offer.
