Benefits of Joining ASLIA Vic
As a dynamic association focussed on the needs of Auslan/English interpreters in Victoria, the benefits of becoming an ASLIA Vic member are many and varied. Not only do you have the opportunity to join with your colleagues in a range of quality, professional development activities, there is also the opportunity to participate in ongoing discourse about our profession, its values and ethics as well as what is current professional practice. As a practice professional, this association exists for you!
ASLIA Vic prides itself on its provision of cutting-edge, professional development opportunities that cover a wide range of topics including educational, theatre, conference, medical and legal interpreting. In addition, we alert our members to professional development opportunities provided by other organisations. All of our professional development utilises the expertise of individuals such as academics, practitioners and members of the Deaf community.
Membership fees represent value for money, with fees set at the following:
$100 for full members (accredited interpreters and DIs)
$80 for associate members (unaccredited interpreters or accredited interpreters who have not practiced in the past 12 months)
$200 for corporate members/organisations
Membership fees entitle you to either free access to professional development or a discounted rate.
ASLIA Vic believes that no member should be excluded from activities due to financial hardship. ASLIA Vic is committed to the availability of professional education and training for interpreters. Therefore, we lobby as well as work with institutions such as TAFE institutes and universities towards the establishment and maintenance of courses in Auslan and Auslan interpreting.
We recognise that interpreting can be an isolating profession. Therefore, we provide extensive information to members both electronically as well as through regular, general meetings. These meetings share information between members and between the executive committee and the membership. As well, meetings offer an opportunity for any member to raise issues of concern.
But it isn’t all serious! We also provide opportunities for interpreters to come together to have fun and socialise.
Finally, ASLIA Vic is a source of advice, research and resources, which include videos, books and reports that can be borrowed by members. ASLIA Vic is also a vital reference with respect to working conditions, ethics, employers, training and other contextual information.
Being a member of ASLIA Vic also means you have automatic membership to ASLIA National and receive regular updates from our national body.
