Learning
Auslan
To become an Auslan interpreter, the first step in your journey is to learn Auslan (Australian Sign Language). Australian Sign Language (Auslan) is the language of Deaf people in Australia. It is a visual-spatial language that uses signs, facial expression, space and movement to convey meaning. Its grammar and structure is distinctly different to English. Like all languages, much of its meaning is culturally bound. To learn Auslan requires as much effort and time as it does to learn any second language. In Victoria, you can study Auslan either part-time or full-time at the following institutions: Kangan-Batman Institute
of TAFE La Trobe University
