The BOOKED club is a great opportunity for Auslan users to discuss something in common in a different environment with a different agenda!
The most recent book that was discussed was “People like Us” by Waleed Ali. This author is a regular co-presenter on ABC radio for advice and reference on some of the most sensitive topics of our generation. This book was very easy to discuss because in many ways, readers were able to relate in some way to the content.
The significance of this book club is it can benefit participants in many ways….of course it’s an excuse to socialize, make new friends, increase your intellect, and respect the differing views of individual readers.
I strongly urge others to make the effort to be involved. |

The first, fun, meeting of ‘Booked’ took place on Monday 24 September 2007.
Booked is a book club for people fluent in Auslan. Anyone who uses Auslan is welcome. It may even be the first club of its kind in Victoria and Australia!
On Monday, approximately 10 people from ASLIA Vic and the deaf community convened at the Groove Train café in Richmond after work. Sipping lattes, drinking wine, and eating yummy food, the group introduced themselves to each other, making new friends and renewing old acquaintances in the process. Jokes were made, and anecdotes told. Everyone’s goals for the group were discussed. It became apparent that everyone was extremely keen to read, and to be able to talk with others about the books they liked, or hated!
A little later, discussion turned to books themselves. Soon the group had a whole list of books that they were keen to read as part of Booked. After a vote, the first two books were selected for the next two meetings of the club. Slaughterhouse 5 by Kurt Vonnegut for October, and People Like Us by Waleed Aly for November.
Booked is meeting again on 22 October at Soul Mama café in St. Kilda at 6.30pm. It’s bound to be another great night of good people and good food. If you’re keen, come along! Membership is open to everyone who uses Auslan, and you can nominate more books to be added to the list for reading!
Try and read Slaughterhouse 5 if you can! For questions, contact Susan Emerson on Mobile: 0403 227 978 or email: slemerson87@hotmail.com or click here to download the flyer. |
